Polyaspartic flake garage floor in Hammond, IN

What polyaspartic is

Polyaspartic is an aliphatic polyurea coating. It cures much faster than standard epoxy, stays tough and flexible, resists abrasion and chemicals, and does not yellow in sunlight. For homeowners who want their garage back quickly, and for installations late in the season, it is often the best choice.

A longer installation season

Standard epoxy slows dramatically below about fifty degrees and can stay soft or cloudy if it gets too cold. Polyaspartic cures at much lower temperatures. That means we can coat unheated garages later into fall and earlier in spring, and heated spaces through the winter. For detached alley garages without heat, polyaspartic can be the difference between getting the work done this year or waiting until next.

Fast return to service

Many polyaspartic garage floors are completed in one day, with foot traffic that evening and vehicles back in about a day. Compared to multi-day epoxy systems, that means less disruption, especially for households with one garage and winter weather on the way.

Salt and chemical resistance

Cured polyaspartic resists road salt, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, oil, gasoline, brake fluid and antifreeze. It holds up to the scraping of snow shovels and the weight of snowblowers. Its flexibility helps it handle temperature swings without cracking.

Epoxy primer underneath

For most floors, we pair an epoxy primer with polyaspartic base and topcoats. Epoxy penetrates and bonds strongly to the ground concrete, while polyaspartic provides speed, UV stability and toughness. On slabs with moisture issues, a vapor-tolerant epoxy primer is essential because polyaspartic alone does not block vapor.

Skill matters

Polyaspartic has a short working time. It is mixed in small batches and applied quickly by an experienced crew. Done poorly, it can show roller marks or uneven texture. Our installers work in coordinated teams to keep a wet edge and an even finish.

Finishes

Polyaspartic works with solid colors, full flake broadcasts and quartz. It is also an excellent clear topcoat over existing epoxy floors that are bonded but worn. Grit is added for traction where slush and water collect.

Comparing options

Epoxy alone is affordable and strong but slow and temperature sensitive. Polyurethane topcoats resist UV but take longer between coats. Polyaspartic combines speed, cold-weather tolerance and durability. For most garages here, an epoxy-primed polyaspartic system offers the best balance.

Cost

Material costs are higher than standard epoxy, though fewer labor days offset some of the difference. Area, preparation, repairs and finish choice determine price.

Care

Squeegee meltwater out, rinse salt residue, clean with a neutral cleaner and wipe spills promptly. A clear recoat can refresh the floor years later.

Questions

Can you install in November? Often yes, depending on slab temperature and conditions.

Is there an odor? Some during application; we ventilate, and it fades quickly.

Does it get slippery? We add grit for traction.

How long does it last? Many years with proper installation and care.

Recoating an existing floor before winter

If your garage already has a coating that is bonded but scratched, dull or stained, a polyaspartic recoat in early fall can refresh it before salt season. We clean and degrease the floor, abrade the surface to give the new coat something to grip, repair any chips and apply a clear or tinted polyaspartic layer. The job usually takes a single day, and the floor is ready for vehicles quickly. If the old coating is peeling or blistering, though, a recoat will not solve the problem; see our repair page for that situation.

Workshops and hobby spaces

Woodworkers, mechanics and hobbyists like polyaspartic because it handles dropped tools, rolling carts and spilled solvents while keeping downtime to a minimum.
